Doug Williams

Doug has worked in the field of Cultural Heritage Management both as a Consultant Archaeologist and a senior public servant with Aboriginal Affairs Victoria (AAV) and the NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service (NSW NPWS). As the Senior Project Archaeologist for Victoria, Doug was responsible for the design and implementation of a state wide strategy to identify key Aboriginal places and make recommendations for their long term management and conservation. Doug was the project manager for numerous projects management plans, management works, developing funding bids and overseeing the expenditure of Victoria’s annual budget for capital works on Aboriginal heritage sites. He was also involved in the design and delivery of training to regionally based Aboriginal Heritage Officers.

As Executive Officer - Willandra Lakes Region World Heritage Area with the NSW NPWS Doug was required to implement management recommendations of the Plan of Management for the Willandra Lakes World Heritage Area. The position involved liaison with Aboriginal traditional owners, property owners and land managers, Commonwealth and State heritage management agencies. The position coordinated the activities of three separate committees of management and also reported to the UNESCO World Heritage Organisation . The position was also involved in cultural heritage management issues and procedures in the World Heritage Area.

As a Consultant Archaeologist with Williams Barber Archaeological Services P/L and Archaeo Analysis Doug has been involved in all stages of the planning and execution of numerous heritage identification and management projects of varying scale. He has worked on research and salvage excavations. Prior to involvement in the consulting industry Doug was employed by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and by the Australian National University where he was involved in recording and reporting on historical sites. Recently Doug has been involved as a venture partner in the establishment of an Archaeological Tourism and Research project in south west NSW.

Doug has lectured in Cultural Resource Management, and has tutored students in Cultural Heritage Management units at the University of Canberra. He is experienced in the use of EDM technology and associated mapping software in relation to its application to cultural heritage surveys.

Doug is a member of the Australian Archaeological Association that has a comprehensive Code of Ethics
